That first tweet was missing the word "art." Oops. I've added it since.

07:00 pm - Christmukkah Dinner
To celebrate Chanukkah being over, mom decided to do an early dinner today (Thursday) and invited my brother and me over. I left my house around 2ish, got to her place around 3ish, and loaded up the car while it was still daylight (a case of diet peach iced tea, 4 vases she no longer needs, and 3 pieces of art (one is the 4th in the series of waterfront scenes by different artists; I've had the other 3 hanging on a wall since 1997)). The menu was:
  • Appetizer — Baked salami. Basically take a small (maybe it was 1 lb. total) salami, score it, and slather on a mixture of apricot preserves and 3 mustards (yellow, dijon, and honey-). Bake at 350˚F for an hour or so, basting occasionally. Serve warm.

  • Main — Standing rib roast. She ordered a 3-rib loin-end roast of beef and was told it'd be 5–6 lbs, which for the three of us would be plenty (with leftovers). The roast itself was closer to 9 lbs, so we've got lots of leftovers. The roast is removed from the bones and then tied back on (to make carving easier later). The whole thing is slathered with a mixture of 2 parts yellow mustard and 1 part Worcestershire sauce with garlic powder added in, left to marinate overnight, and then roasted for about 20 minutes per pound at 325˚F. I'd brought a meat thermometer so we could pull it when the ends were medium rare and the middle was rare (so it'd survive reheating as leftovers later). I had an end cut (probably a pound or so), and took 2 more slices plus a rib home with me.

  • Side dishes — We had two or three sides, depending on how you count them:

    • Stuffed acorn squash. Halve and remove the seeds from an acorn squash, and fill the cavity with a mixture of diced pears, dried cherries, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Bake until the squash is fork-tender. Delicious.

    • Potato latkes. I don't have her recipe handy, but she'd used 4 large baking potatoes to make 'em. Alas, they were okay before reheating, but they became more charcoal briquette than latke by the time they got table side. Sadface.

    • Applesauce. Homemade applesauce to go with the latkes. My brother was surprised when he got the cinnamon stick.

  • Dessert — Ice cream sundaes. I had a scoop each of chocolate mousse and toffee crunch ice creams, topped with hot bittersweet chocolate sauce. Yum.
(There's a couple of pictures — of the roast and squash — on Twitter.)

I loaded up the car (with the teapot, meat thermometer, and leftovers), managed to get home by 6pm, unloaded the car, rewrapped the leftovers parcel that leaked, moved a couple of bunches of fake flowers to the vases that Mom sent, washed the teapot, and now I'm ready for a nap. Or maybe that beef rib....

06:45 pm - Food Pr0n: Hoisin-Glazed Pork Tenderloin
I had a 2-pack of pork tenderloins from Costco I'd defrosted this weekend, so tonight I glazed 'em with hoisin sauce, then sprinkled 'em with onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Roasted for about 40 minutes at 350˚F (until the internal temperature was about 140˚F). I served it with more hoisin sauce and a side of rice-a-roni.

01:20 pm - The Past Two Weeks
Whoops. I realized today that other than the tweets that auto-post (to LJ but not DW), I haven't actually said anything here since the day after Thanksgiving, 2 weeks ago. I should probably post more of an update, huh?

Regarding my grandmother, the hospital did wind up releasing her the first week of December, and she perked up a bit once home (more color in her face, willing to eat more, and so on), so that's good news. On the other hand, she's effectively in at-home hospice care now and anything we'd do is palliative at best, so while we know it's coming, there's still the uncertainty of when.

Regarding the rest of my home life, it's pretty much status quo. The occasional bout of cleaning, laundry, and so on is pretty dull to think about. I do like seeing the additional (fake) flowers and plants I've got thanks to mom; I should go buy another vase or three, though (since I need three total and am currently using a crappy one I hate and an oversized drinking glass for the second, and the third set of flowers are laying on the kitchen counter).

On the food front, I wound up finishing up the Thanksgiving leftovers (and the batch of stuffing that I made since there wasn't that much left over from the day itself), and a small ham, and a batch of cioppino, and this week I got carryout pizza that I finished up last night. No new recipes to speak of, except I did make a loaf of banana bread last weekend. I brought it into work on Tuesday and it was about half gone when I got in Wednesday morning. (It was gone by Thursday morning so either people finished it off, took it home, or threw it out.) It's a pretty simple recipe — mash 3 ripe bananas with 2 eggs; then add sugar, salt, baking soda, and flour; mix well; dump into buttered loaf pan; bake — but it wasn't done after 60 minutes at 350˚F and might've been a bit over when I pulled it after another 10. Oh well.

On the work front, it's been interesting to say the least. My first manager from when I came back to U-M has turned in his notice; January 5th is his last day, and he and his wife (also at U-M) are moving to Puerto Rico to unlax and rewind for (they think) a couple of years. The departmental admin/finance/HR type whose cube is next to mine is being reassigned (effective January 1) and moved upstairs (effective by February 1 when the space is ready). It's not clear where the administrative functions are all going (some are going to another admin type but not all of them, and she doesn't know which ones); it's unclear where the HR functions are going (FTEs are going to the shared services center but where student temps go isn't defined); she's keeping some (but not all) of the financial bits.... Oh, and today's her last day in the office until after New Year's, and nobody understands how much is going to get dropped on the floor.

Speaking of things getting dropped, my senior-most Service Desk person is heading off to work for the medical school; today's her last day. In my opinion she got screwed: she was doing the work of the manager, then they told her she wouldn't get that job and hired someone else... who was then in the hospital for several weeks, so she continued to do the job. There's a lot of stuff she's done to be helpful, and nobody's around to pick that up. Oh, and HR held up the 6 new positions until it was too late for her to train them, so the new manager effectively has 1 FTE who's leaving today, 1 FTE who's about to go on vacation for the holiday break and will be returning to Central Services soon thereafter, a couple of student temps, and up to 6 open reqs (1 of which is being filled but it's not clear when s/he'd be starting). Service Desk coverage is going to be poor for the next month at least.

The University closes between Christmas and New Year's... except the on-call phone for the three so-called critical services — BlueReview lecture capture/delivery, SharePoint, and the web content management delivery — remains live. I go back on call Tuesday December 16th evening and stay on through noon on the 30th, when I get to drive in and hand it off to the other guy for 2 weeks. He got stuck with Labor Day and Thanksgiving and is on vacation for Christmas so I bit the bullet and said I'd take it. Oh, and he goes out on paternity leave in, we think, March, for at least 4 weeks, so we need management to decide if they're going to continue the service (I hope not) and if so who else will join us on the rotation. The money's nice but I'm sick of being 1 of 2 people (on a team of 8 FTEs) to carry the damned (dumb) phone.
